Year 10 Taster Day at Lancaster & Morecambe College
Year 10 visited Lancaster and Morecambe College in July to learn about courses they could study when they leave school. They opted to visit at least 2 departments and took part in a variety of activities such as catering, beauty treatments, brickwork and sport. This was an excellent opportunity for students to familiarise themselves with the college and its facilities as part of their post 16 planning.
Here a few comments from the students who attended:
It was a really interesting day. I enjoyed both sessions and won in both of the sports activities (red team football and badminton). The brickwork was good - we were all given 36 bricks and had to make a wall corner. It was a very worthwhile day.

I thought it was good - I was impressed by the salons and the tutors were really friendly and helpful and made us feel comfortable. A really good day.
Kellie Schools
I thought it was a good college but not the one for me, but I did enjoy the day. In the morning I made a chicken vegetable stir fry and in the afternoon I did ICT, creating music on a disc called EJay.
Laurence Whitefield
The information about A' Level courses was very helpful. They have a wide range of subjects including Law and a Critical Thinking course. The college offers the chance to do A' Levels and vocational courses on the same campus, which is an advantage.

HADRIAN'S WALL WALK
A great big thank you to all those people who sponsored me to "Walk the Wall". It was a fantastic experience to wander alone through some of the most beautiful and historical landscape this country has.
The weather was perfect, warm and dry with a cool breeze and no major hiccups, (apart from the landlady at one B & B who had double booked my room!!!).
However I raised £230 for charity. The money will be split between Cystic Fibrosis and The Breast Cancer Campaign. Once again thank you.

SEDBERGH FESTIVAL 2006
The Committee would like to thank all those who supported the Festival in so many ways, whether as performers, patrons, sponsors, audience or in the many unseen ways so essential to the smooth running of all the events. The Festival has become part of the Sedbergh scene and we look forward to another in 2008.
SHOP WHERE THE ACTION IS: DENT
Among the many pleasures of Dent are our two excellent shops. Dent Stores and Dent Post Office. Come and use them: small is beautiful.
Both of them offer a remarkable range of goods, and provide warm, personal, old-fashioned service.
If you like the look of our advertisement on Page 42, come and Lookaround.

SETTLEBECK HIGH SCHOOL REUNION
A reunion for the class of 1996 was held at 'The Head' on Saturday 24th June.
Two thirds of the class turned up with others sending their apologies for what turned out to be an interesting and fun evening.
It must have been quite daunting for some at first walking into a room and being faced with people you hadn't seen for 10 years!! Some even brought their partners, wife's and husbands which was great.
Old school photos were passed around along with many stories and tales of school days.
It just so happened that one teacher was present, Mrs Oughton. She was enjoying a quiet meal only to be greeted by a bunch of ex-pupils!
Everyone seemed to be doing well for themselves, some are teaching, running their own businesses and some even have families!!
Thanks to Liz and Dave at 'The Head' for allowing us to meet there and for the sandwiches and chips.
A huge thank you to all who made the effort and turned up, to those that travelled long distances from Birmingham, South Wales, Oxford, Leeds, York, Newcastle and Carlisle to be there, it wouldn't of been a reunion without you!
Everyone was up for the next one, so keep reading the Lookaround, you will see it advertised here in 10 years time!
BUMPY ROAD
I write of a farmer who was driving his horse and trap over the top of Haworth when he saw a gentleman walking down and offered him a lift. When the gentleman got in, the farmer cracked his whip and the horse set off at a pace. The gentleman gripped the sides of the trap and said, "I'd gladly give a sovereign to be out of this". The farmer replied, "Don't be so flush wi' thee brass. Thou might be out for nowt in a minute".

Sedbergh Primary School
On Thursday 29th June Yr 6 went to Farfield Mill to do some art with local artists. They did mask making, wax painting, felt making and weaving. In the mask making they made exotic animal masks out of black, white and gold card with Wendy.
There was also a competition for the best mask which Rachel Hendrickse won and received a golden mask worth £20. In the wax painting with Carole they drew pictures with crayons and then painted on them leaving the wax showing. In the Felt making with Lee they used wool molded together to create felt. As well they did weaving with Laura and made picture weavings out of thread in the forms of deserts, rainforest, outer space and sea. Some people bought French bobbins and a ball of wool.

PHOTO CALL
I have had no feedback at all on the old Dent school photo which is a shame. This month I am submitting 2 photos. The first comes from Maurice Campbell and is of the British School, year not known. Thanks to Maurice for this one. I recognise Maurice and his brother Raymond (whom I didn't recognsie) who is front row first on left, the teacher is Margaret Potter.
The 2nd photo is of someone in the Home Guard, possibly Dent during the 2nd World War.
If anyone can give me some names I will be very grateful. So answers to Shirley Tebay, Walnut Bungalow, Dent, LA10 5QT or phone 015396 25001 or email shirley.tebay@btinternet.com
