Unfortunately copy deadlines for the last edition of Lookaround did not allow me to say how much my family and I enjoyed the Sedbergh Gala. One of the many great joys of this job is being invited along to the local fairs and galas that occur across the constituency during the summer. Yours was one of the more civilized ones, another I went to a few weeks ago involved me being put in the stocks and having wet sponges thrown at me by disgruntled constituents! Actually, I must be doing something right because people did not seem to throw them with quite the venom that I have seen on previous occasions. Also, I did not get the chance to congratulate Sedbergh on becoming England's first "Book Town". This is a singular honour and one that I hope brings many visitors to Sedbergh. I tried to make up for my omission in Lookaround by proposing a motion of congratulations to Sedbergh in the House of Commons. So you can read all about how successful you are in Hansard if you should so desire. Sadly, my job is not all fun and congratulations. I have spent quite a bit of time over the past month contacting Cumbria County Council about the closure of the road from Sedbergh to Garsdale Head. It almost goes without saying that it is unacceptable for the council to close roads with no warning to local residents. Especially in 'out of the way areas' like Garsdale Head where there are not that many roads to go around and closure creates massive problems for local residents. The fact that the council was not even able to find the fund a compromise solution of diverting cars over adjacent farm land given that they have created the problem is even more disappointing. However, the issue that concerns me is a much broader one. Garsdale Parish Council have been telling Cumbria Council for some time that the road was in a very poor state of repair but nothing was done until the road collapsed. This is frankly unacceptable, roads cannot be allowed to get into such a poor state of repair that they collapse. That this happened despite warnings over its likelihood does leave me wondering exactly how the council is prioritising its road repair programme. I worry that the council thinks that because a road is not that busy it is not very important, they need to consider the importance of the road to the people who use it. They also need to take more seriously reports from Parish Councils telling them about the poor state of repair of roads in their area. I will be taking this up with the County Council the next time that I speak to them. As ever, if I can help you with these or any other issues then please contact me at Tim Farron MP, Yard 2, Stricklandgate, Kendal LA9 4ND or by email at tim@timfarron.co.uk

KILLINGTON SPORTS
Record turnout in glorious weather. After a couple of damp years, the prayers of the organisers were answered with a glorious day on the traditional Thursday of the Spring Bank Holiday week. There was a record attendance of over 500 at Beckside, Killington, and with record entries to the races, wrestling and other events of the Sports it was one of the most successful events ever. Entries came from all over Cumbria and our neighbouring counties with many familiar faces in attendance. Another (unintended) "record" was set in the U11 Fell Race when the leaders turned around the first marker post, the rest of the field followed and returned a "record time" of 2 minutes 15 seconds!! On a more serious note, the Sports Committee were grateful for the assistance of the Fell-Racing Association who recorded all positions and times in the Fell Races for the benefit of their members. Following a tradition of many years - nobody is sure when Killington Sports first started, - the event started with a Tea and races for local children, and then the Open Sports got underway at 6 o'clock with the Open children's and adult Races. Highlights were the ½ Mile, Mile and Fell Races with a well-supported Mountain Bike Race over the Fell Race route. While there were no championships this year, the traditional wrestling was well supported and provided much good sport. The usual sideshows of Quoits, Pitchpenny, Coconut Shy, Darts, Throwing Weights along a Ladder and a Treasure Hunt were also well patronised and the crowd were kept entertained throughout by the commentaries of our regular Handicapper & Main Commentator Roger Ingham and Sports Chairman John Capstick. The evening concluded with the usual fun events such as Potato Races, Sack Races, Mixed 3-Legged Races, Pillow Fights, Egg-throwing and Tug o' Wars. A new cup was presented for the Mile Handicap and the first winner, rather fittingly, was Dick Gorst the Sports' Treasurer. Much credit for another successful Killington Sports goes to Chairman, John Capstick and his Committee for the preparation of the field and organisation on the night, but they would like to express their gratitude to all the sponsors of the events who once again supported the Sports and ensured its financial viability.
