A PLEA FOR HELP

We are moving from Sedbergh and would appeal to anyone who visits the Cemetery on Busk Lane to keep a check on the bird bath, to clean it and put fresh water in.  The birds use it regularly in summer and winter. It doesn't take long to do and would be very much appreciated.  Christine Glynn.

SCOUTS POST

Please note that there will be no Scout Postal Service in Sedbergh this year.

HELP!

The local blind group meets once a month in Sedbergh. Most of the group arrive by taxi and get together in the People's Hall.
The cost of the taxi service and the hire of premises have until now been covered by the parent organisation 'South Lakes Society for the Blind'. Because this Society is at present having financial difficulties it is no longer possible for it to pay for these facilities.
The total cost per year is about £450, the vast majority of which is the cost of using the taxi service. We must either raise the money ourselves or find other ways of arriving at the meetings.
Our group consists mostly of elderly people who as well as having visual problems also have other disabilities such as hearing and mobility problems. It is not easy for us to raise the money ourselves
We are asking if there are any individuals or groups of people in Sedbergh who would either have good money raising ideas
and the energy to organise them or provide a rota of lifts to the meetings.
If you or your organisation feel that you can help us please contact  Jennifer Levitt. e-mail: klevitt@onetel.net. Tel: 25162

STONE CLOSE TEA PARTY
Due to a slight mix up the above 'HELP' notice did not appear in 'Lookaround' as intended last month but many thanks to Jane at Dent Post Office, Christine at Sedbergh Post Office, and Sedbergh newsagents Angela and Terry for distributing leaflets containing the above information and request for assistance.
Some suggestions and offers of help have already been received. One event has already been arranged by Janet Browning of Stone Close Tea Shop, Dent. She is intending to have a 'Tea Party' on the afternoon of Wednesday January 10th  at the Cafe. Tea and Cakes will be available at no charge but donations will be gladly received and all proceeds will go to the Sedbergh group of South Lakes Society for the Blind. The event is open to all and promises to be a lot of fun. Many thanks to Janet for her generosity.

SOUTH LAKES SOCIETY FOR THE BLIND SEDBERGH GROUP

Jack Dawson kindly agreed to chair the October  meeting because the usual chairman Gordon Axford had unfortunately been taken ill. Jack began by remembering Gordon and other friends who were unable to attend because of illness.
The first item on the agenda was a discussion of the financial difficulties faced by the Society. A number of interesting ideas were put forward as to ways in which money could be raised for the Society as a whole and our own Sedbergh group in particular.
It was then a chance for members to relive their war years. Each member was asked to relate his or her most memorable experience of the war. This produced a fascinating collection of stories, some amusing, some frightening and some extremely sad. There were accounts of the extraordinary antics of the Home Guard, a terrifying story of battle in the air, and many memories of privations that were suffered including innovative ways that were found of surmounting them. It was a very lively discussion and brought back the atmosphere of those terrible years.
The November meeting will be lunch at Thorn's Hall. New members are always welcome. There will be no meeting in December.
Please contact Sedbergh 21019 or  Kendal 015397 42633 for information or assistance.
