OLDER PERSONS PROJECT
Shelter Cumbria run an Older Persons Project offering housing and benefit advice to anyone aged over 55. The service is free and we are currently receiving referrals. Shelter recognises that it is often difficult for older people to access services to help them deal with their housing problems. We can offer support and help by being available to give one to one advice either via the telephone, at surgeries or home visits. We can help with lots of housing and benefit problems including;
Disrepair Repossessions and evictions Adaptations Finding suitable accommodation Landlord disputes Housing Benefit Pension credits Attendance allowance Carers allowance Mortgage and rent arrears
The Older People's Project is part of the wider work that Shelter Cumbria does. Shelter Cumbria provides independent and confidential help and advice directly to people with housing problems in Cumbria. How to get in touch: Phone our local rate number: 0845 120 45 65. Ask to speak to our Older Persons Worker. Shelter Cumbria Housing Aid Centre 31 St Andrews View, Penrith,CA11 7YF. Dear Editor, Re. the letter from Brian Wright (July Lookaround). Further to the costs of E.U. Membership he mentions; it is not generally known, what the total cost of the U.K. of E.U. membership is. Ian Milne, economist, of civitas, London, in his little booklet 'A Cost Too Far' puts it at £100 billion per year, which is over £16,500 for each and every U.K. citizen! If Mr. Farron supports this, he should tell us why. The benefits to the U.K., compared to the cost are infinitesimal. We need to be friendly and co-operative with our European neighbours but not controlled by the E.U. as now. U.K. politicians of the three main political party's all want us to stay in the E.U. None will allow us a vote on it. It is not democratic. U.K. politicians have signed away too many U.K. rights to the E.U. The French and the Germans, erstwhile enemies of the U.K., have a majority vote in the E.U. England has a minority vote. They can now take us over by proxy through Brussels! U.K. politicians are allowing this to happen. John Prescott's Regional Assemblies, set up on the pretext of more local democracy, are really about the E.U. plan to abolish England, split the U.K. into "Regions", all ruled from Brussels. We need a vote on U.K. membership of the E.U. and we need it Now. Edwin Bateman

ITALY TRIPS 2007
After very successful trips to the Rome and Naples area this year and last, it is hoped to organise two Sedbergh trips in 2007. We are so fortunate in having a lovely hotel to stay in with excellent food and a wonderful variety of excursions to places on the tourist map - like the Vatican and Pompeii - and lesser-known but highly interesting places like Fumone Castle with its medieval banquet! Party numbers are limited to 20. It is not essential to have learned the Italian language before joining the group - though optional lessons in Italy form a part of the visit. Please contact me if you are interested. The dates for 2007 are May 23rd to 30th and October 23rd to 30th - both times when it should not be too hot in central Italy. If you would like to join a Beginners' Italian class, these will start at the Community Development Centre at Settlebeck on Tuesday 19th at 7.30 pm. (Enrolments Tuesday 12th from 6 - 8pm.) George D. Handley

Church Wardens' Walk. We completed our walk along the Dales Way, (82 miles in six days) feeling fit and blister free! The scenery was wonderful and the weather was very kind to us. We had a lovely time, encouraged by friends and family who came to walk part of the way with us. A big thank you to everyone who sponsored us, thanks to their generosity we have raised £1400, this will be used towards church repairs and a donation to World Vision. Linda Hopkins and Judith Bush
